Once in a lifetime experience

Are you an adrenaline junkie? Do you need more excitement in your life? Do you want to plan a super cool camping trip for your friends? Well, if the answer is yes then this is the thing you were looking for – a camping trip on a erupting volcano in Guatemala. Let me tell you, it is as awesome as it sounds.

The Santiaguito is a crater that is also a lava dome and a part of the Santa Maria Volcano. In the year of 1902 it exploded and it was one of the biggest eruptions of the 20th century. It was so violent that ash could has traveled as far as San Francisco, CA, which is 2500 miles away from Volcano. The lava dome is a result of the 1902 eruption and since then it has been erupting every few hours.

If you want to camp on the Santiaguito Volcano you will first need to climb for 8 hours with 40lb packs. So this is not for the weak of heart, or body. You need to be in pretty good shape. Just remember that you are about to spend 2 days on a erupting, barren volcano, so make sure that you bring plenty of water, at least 6 liters per person.

After two hours of hiking, if you planned everything right, you can take a break at the Santiaguito Mirador and enjoy the view. The next thing you will need to do is cut through some thick overgrowth and five hours later, give or take, you will be at your destination. You will feel as if you arrived on a different planet, everything is covered in ash and the whole landscape is colorless, clouds and fog all around – a camping trip like you never imagined. Some compare it to the Moon.
