Apple’s Watch lineup has seen significant evolution since its inception, with each new release showcasing cutting-edge technology, refined design, and impressive health features. However, amid the glitz of the premium Apple Watch Series 10 and the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 2, a new entry into the affordable SE line is in the works.

According to reports, a new Apple Watch SE featuring a plastic body is being developed, with a launch date expected in 2025. The move towards a more affordable, plastic-bodied smartwatch raises several intriguing questions about its design, target audience, and potential impact on the smartwatch market.

The SE series was introduced by Apple as a more budget-friendly option for users who wanted many of the features of the flagship models but were unwilling to pay the premium price. The first Apple Watch SE, launched in 2020, was well-received for offering a balance between performance and price. In 2022, the second iteration, the Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation), maintained the dual-core Apple S8 SiP processor, a Retina OLED display, and several essential health features such as heart rate monitoring, fall detection, and emergency SOS. However, it lacked some premium aspects like an always-on display, ECG, and SpO2 sensors.

This budget-friendly smartwatch retained Apple’s sleek design language but came in aluminum only, which is still a relatively premium material. Fast forward to 2023, and news started circulating about a significant shift in the SE line—an Apple Watch SE with a plastic body.

The Move to a Plastic Body: Why Now?

Apple’s decision to explore a plastic-bodied Apple Watch SE marks a fascinating shift. The report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hints that Apple is targeting a younger demographic, potentially school-aged children. This hypothesis aligns with trends in some U.S. schools where smartphones have been banned during class hours. A smartwatch with cellular connectivity could serve as a communication device without the distractions associated with smartphones. The plastic body, combined with bold color options, is reminiscent of the iPhone 5c’s vibrant design, which was marketed as a more affordable and fun alternative to the flagship iPhone models.

There are several reasons why Apple might opt for plastic in the SE line:

    1. Cost Reduction: A plastic case can significantly lower manufacturing costs. This would allow Apple to price the Watch SE competitively, making it more accessible to a broader audience.
    2. Durability: While aluminum is more premium, plastic is often more resilient to dents and scratches. For younger users who may not handle devices with care, a plastic-bodied smartwatch could provide additional durability.
    3. Design Flexibility: Plastic offers greater flexibility in terms of color customization. Apple may opt for bright, playful color schemes to appeal to younger consumers, as Gurman hinted with the comparison to the iPhone 5c.
    4. Weight Considerations: A plastic body would be lighter than metal options, making it more comfortable for all-day wear, especially for children or individuals with smaller wrists.

    Challenges in Plastic Design

While the move to plastic offers some advantages, it’s not without its challenges. One major concern is quality. Apple is known for its attention to detail and high-quality standards, so transitioning to a material that could be perceived as less premium requires careful engineering. According to reports, Apple has faced difficulties with ensuring the plastic material meets its standards of durability and aesthetics. Consumers have come to expect a certain level of refinement from Apple products, and ensuring that the plastic body doesn’t feel cheap will be critical to the Watch SE’s success.

Moreover, the shift to plastic coincides with Apple’s transition to titanium for its premium models, as seen in the Apple Watch Ultra. Titanium is stronger, lighter, and more durable than stainless steel or aluminum, and its use in premium models highlights Apple’s ongoing effort to push the envelope in terms of material innovation. For the Watch SE, plastic will need to strike the right balance between cost-efficiency and quality.

What to Expect in Terms of Features

The new plastic-bodied Watch SE is expected to build upon the features of the 2022 model, but with some notable upgrades. One of the most anticipated changes is a “processor jump.” While the exact processor has not been confirmed, the current SE model runs on the same S8 SiP chip as the Apple Watch Series 8. The move to a new processor could potentially bring enhanced performance and efficiency. Given that Apple has consistently pushed the boundaries of its in-house processors, we might see a chip designed specifically for the new SE, optimized for everyday use without draining too much battery.

Other features are likely to include:

    • Cellular Connectivity: This feature will likely be a cornerstone of the new SE, especially if the watch is targeted at younger users in environments where smartphones are restricted.
    • Health Monitoring: While the SE may not have the advanced health features of the Series 10 or the Ultra (such as ECG and SpO2 sensors), it will likely retain critical functions such as heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and activity tracking.
    • Water Resistance: The current SE models are water-resistant up to 50 meters, and it’s reasonable to expect the same for the upcoming version, despite the shift to plastic.
    • Bold, Fun Colors: Just as the iPhone 5c came in vibrant colors, the new Watch SE will reportedly feature bold color options. This aesthetic could be a big draw for younger audiences or anyone looking for a more playful smartwatch.

    Target Audience and Market Positioning

The new plastic Apple Watch SE is expected to target a younger demographic, particularly children and teenagers. With schools increasingly banning smartphones during class hours, the SE could become an ideal communication device for kids. It offers a way for parents to stay in touch with their children without the added distraction of social media apps or games. Apple could also explore features like parental controls to make the watch even more appealing to families.

Additionally, the SE will likely appeal to budget-conscious consumers who want the Apple Watch experience without paying the premium for flagship models. The lower price point could also attract first-time smartwatch buyers or individuals looking for a secondary device for fitness tracking or basic communication needs.
